Looking After Your Watch

September 6th, 2010 by beth16

Once you have bought a quality watch, you will want to make sure that you keep it in decent shape. Often people don’t realize that there is a certain procedure that is required for the upkeep of a watch. This fact is especially true if you are not wearing your watch on a regular basis. This concept might, at first, seem counterintuitive. Many people think that they can better preserve a watch if it is sitting in a drawer. However, if you don’t wear your watch every so often, the lubricants can harden. As a result, the mechanical part of the watch can end up with friction that ends up damaging the internal timekeeping movements. Make sure that you at least take time to wind your watch. Just because a watch is in your drawer doesn’t mean that you can forget about it.

Watches can be extremely sensitive to changes in temperature. They do not work well in high temperatures or low temperatures. Keep them out of the heat and cold. When you know that you will be heading to the mountains for a day in the snow, leave your watch at home. Consider investing in a low priced back up watch to wear in these situations. Watches should also be removed prior to playing sports, especially those involving a lot of contact or movement. Watches also need regular cleaning. Dirt is everywhere, and your watch can build up a dirty residue if it is not wiped clean regularly. Wipe the entire watch, including the face, with a soft cloth to easily remove dirt, oil and sweat. Professionally cleaning the watch and its inner workings every couple of years is recommended. This maintenance will keep your gears in optimal condition.

Don’t forget to also wind your watch. Even self-winding watches will stop running after a few days. Make sure that you manually wind your watch to keep it in good condition. Be sure to wind it in a forward direction. Just wind to the point where you feel a bit of resistance and then stop. Take care of your watch. After all, with the proper care and treatment, it will probably last for many years. These simple steps will make sure that your watch is always ready with the right time.
